Electric Hues Part I: Red Light Therapy Is...

Miracle cure? There's no such thing. So, is this just another fad, or do we have solid evidence of red light's positive impacts on the human body?

What is red light therapy? (RLT)

Red light therapy (RLT) has gained significant attention as a non-invasive, therapeutic approach to a variety of health concerns. Today's LED (light emitting diode) technology allow us to target narrowband wavelengths of light that are tuned for effectiveness.

But what exactly is red light therapy, and how does it work? In this guide, we’ll explore the science behind RLT, its benefits, and where it lives within a wellness plan.

Red Light Science

Light is composed of photons, tiny particles that carry energy. The color, or wavelength, of light determines how deep it can penetrate into the skin tissue and effect response from the body.

Light wavelengths are measured in nanometers (nm). Red light therapy uses wavelengths between 600 and 1000nm. With Rube we chose Red 660 (red light) and Far-Red 850 (near-infrared) and believe they give peak penetration:

  • Red 660 (Red Light): This wavelength primarily affects the surface of the skin. It penetrates about 2-3 millimeters deep, making it ideal for treating skin conditions such as wrinkles, scars, and inflammation. Red light at 660nm stimulates collagen production, which helps to improve skin texture and reduce signs of aging.

  • Far-Red 850 (Near-Infrared): Near-infrared penetrates deeper into the body, reaching tissues, muscles, and even bones. At this wavelength, the emission helps to reduce inflammation, promote circulation, and accelerate muscle recovery. It’s especially beneficial for treating joint pain, muscle soreness, and stimulating the brain's waves. No brainwaves were injured during the writing of this guide.

    Red Light Therapy

The benefits of red light therapy stem from its ability to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. Here’s how it works, at the cellular level:

    1. Photon Absorption: When red or near-infrared light is applied to the skin, the photons are absorbed by the mitochondria, the energy production powerhouses of cells.

    2. Increased ATP Production: The absorbed light energy stimulates the mitochondria to produce more adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule that cells use for energy. With more ATP available, cells can function more efficiently and repair themselves more effectively.

    3. Enhanced Cellular Function: The increase in ATP triggers a waterfall of beneficial effects. Cells become more resilient, inflammation is reduced, and the production of collagen and elastin is boosted. Leading to faster healing, reduced pain, and improved skin health.

    4. Improved Circulation: Red light therapy also promotes better blood flow in the treated areas, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to tissues while removing waste products. This enhanced circulation further supports the body's healing process.

      Benefits of Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy is versatile. Some of the most well-documented benefits include:

      • Skin Health: RLT is effective in reducing wrinkles, scars, and acne. It promotes an even skin tone and enhances overall skin texture.

      • Pain Relief: By reducing inflammation and promoting tissue repair, RLT can alleviate chronic pain from conditions like arthritis, tendonitis, and muscle strains.

      • Muscle Recovery: Athletes and fitness enthusiasts can use RLT to speed up recovery after workouts. It helps reduce muscle soreness and accelerates the healing of microtears.

      • Wound Healing: RLT can expedite the healing of wounds, cuts, and burns by stimulating cellular repair and reducing inflammation.

      • Mental Health: Emerging research suggests that RLT may also have benefits for mental health by improving mood, reducing symptoms of depression, and enhancing cognitive function.
